1. JOLLOF RICE (West Africa). 

Jollof Rice is perhaps one of the most widely known foods that originated in Africa.

However, there's this rivalry that exists among Nigerians, Senegalese and Ghanaians as to who makes the dish best.

A simple, spicy one-pot dish comprising, at its most basic form, rice, tomatoes, onions, and pepper and served with meat or fish. Best enjoyed with dodo(plantain). it's often served at Afrobeats parties and other festive gatherings.

2. BOLE (Roasted plantain, sauce) AND FISH, (Nigeria).

It is most common in the South-South (Niger Delta) and South-Western parts of Nigeria.

The Bole refers to ‘roasted’ plantains and the fish is almost always ‘affordable and plentiful’ Mackerel.

3. BANKU and TILAPIA, (Ghana).

One of the main dishes of the people who live by the Ghanaian coast.

A mix of fermented corn and cassava dough, diced tomatoes, onions and a very hot pepper, which is served as orange size balls alongside Tilapia.

Tilapia is a grilled, succulent fresh water fish. It usually compliments Banku.

 

4. NYAMA NA IRIO, (Kenya).

This is a well-loved dish. Ask any Kenyan about a delicious comfort food and watch he or she exclaim "irio" in excitement.

Although it has many variations, it is made of mashed-up potatoes, peas, beans, corn and onion and often served with spiced roasted meat to make a delicious dish called nyama na irio. A Simple, healthy, and comforting dish.

 

5. PIRI PIRI CHICKEN, (Mozambique).

Piri piri is Swahili for “pepper pepper,” and is the Portuguese Romanization of the term for these peppers that are indigenous to a number of African countries, including Mozambique.

Piri Piri Grill Chicken as fondly called by tourist but simply known as grilled chicken – moist, juicy, beautifully browned chicken with a Smokey spicy coconut cream sauce. And best served traditionally with matapa, a dish of cassava leaves cooked in a peanut sauce.
